What if Crypt of the Necrodancer met Hollow Knight, and pirates of the steampunk persuasion? That's the idea behind this project, and I need you to tell me if it's fun to play,

Combat Mechanics currently implemented:

  • Health - Can only be depleted by physical damage. When depleted, the character dies. Basic stuff.
  • Poise - Depleting poise stuns the character for a while, making them vulnerable. Dealing poise damage from behind adds 1 additional poise damage.
  • Armor - Blocks all physical damage, and can only be broken with poise damage. When broken, it no longer blocks physical damage.
  • Shield - Blocks attacks, but can't block Heavy attacks in rapid succession.

Player Mechanics currently implemented:

  • Dodge/Dodge Attack - Move 2 squares at once, and lunge towards enemies, attacking them. Deals one poise damage.
  • Parry - Redirect light attacks and turn the enemy away from you, dealing poise damage in the process.
  • Counter-attack - Negate Heavy Attacks, and your attack immediately after will deal increased physical/poise damage.
  • Punch (although the animation doesn't match, yet) - Perform up to 3 punches in a 4 move combo. Punches only deal poise damage, and can break an enemy's poise.

I've been developing this in my free time for the past few years. There are actually two versions of this project, a pixelated one, and the new one. This release is mostly focused on the new version, but I am including two boss fights from the original version, because they're cool.

The story is quite interesting so far, and I don't want to spoil anything, but I will say one thing: The intro begins with a sailor beating a drum and singing a story of how he escaped death. As the song goes on, the camera moves towards the drum, and it becomes the drum you see at the bottom of the screen. I really want to tell the rest, but that would spoil the experience I'm aiming for.

My dream, currently, is to have Brace Yourself Games to co-develop this game, and eventually publish it. I really want real artists and musicians to make it a truly unforgettable experience.

This demo is totally FREE to play on PC, but any donations are GREATLY appreciated and invaluable to the funding of this project. If you enjoyed it, please consider giving a couple dollars.

Xbox Controls are here, since only keyboard controls are shown in-game:

  • Movement - Left Stick or D-pad
  • Dodge - Right Stick, or A + Movement
  • Combat Ability - X
  • Open Settings - Menu Button

This was exhausting to create, so please let me know what you think! Is it fun? Do you think I have a chance at getting a deal with Brace Yourself Games? All criticism is welcome!

Wow, I just played this demo, and I LOVE the flow of the game. I think the biggest part in that is the adaptive music system, since it seems to try to match engaging with enemies and such. When you stroll toward an enemy and combo them perfectly, while the additional instrument kicks in on the first hit you do is just phenomenal.

One thing I noticed was that I sometimes thought I could jump up a ledge on the bottom of my character even though it was a wall. It is much more obvious when the side or bottom of the wall is visible. Maybe there's a way to indicate this better.

Another is sometimes when I tried to punch, it did not work. And I was not entirely sure why, so there is definitely potential for more clarity there as well.

Did you do the music yourself? Since you mention wanting "real artists and musicians" to work on it, but I really vibed with the track in the demo.
